One Platform for Linear and Streaming
Warner Bros. Discovery rebuilds its ad stack on AWS agentic AI to unify how its TV is planned and bought
By Alexander Marshall
For decades, buying television meant choosing a lane: linear or digital, each with its own teams, tools and silos. Warner Bros. Discovery is trying to erase that line. On June 18, 2026 it unveiled an ad-tech stack rebuilt on AWS agentic AI, designed to plan, buy and measure its premium inventory across linear and streaming as one.
WHAT ACTUALLY CHANGED
On June 18, 2026, Warner Bros. Discovery and Amazon Web Services announced next-generation advertising technology built with AWS agentic AI, expanding WBD's ad-tech stack and deploying autonomous agents to plan, activate, optimize and monetize premium inventory across its US linear and digital channels. The point is convergence: one platform for linear and streaming. WBD rebuilt longstanding, siloed internal workflows from the ground up into a single, automated, data-driven platform, unifying a buying experience that has historically been split across disconnected linear and digital systems.
Autonomous agents sit at the core. The system uses AI agents for intelligent media planning, dynamic forecasting, real-time optimization and closed-loop measurement, and is built to continuously self-optimize, learning from outcomes to improve results for buyers and sellers with each campaign. It runs on AWS's agentic infrastructure. WBD is using Amazon Bedrock AgentCore for orchestration alongside Amazon SageMaker and Amazon Quick, built around a composable data and interoperability layer that gives the AI agents access to real-time campaign context.
The interoperability emphasis is forward-looking. A composable layer that lets agents exchange real-time context is precisely what buyer-side and seller-side agents will need to transact with each other, so WBD is building not just for its own automation but for a market where agents on both sides of the trade increasingly negotiate directly. The rollout is phased through 2026. WBD began the year with agentic automation for direct-response and commercial workflows, advanced audience forecasting and enhanced measurement, with a unified media planning tool planned for the third quarter and composable order management, pricing and stewardship following in the fourth.
It builds on a pressured backdrop. The move extends WBD's May upfront pitch of contextual, shoppable and agentic ad products, and arrives after the company reported a 7% year-over-year decline in first-quarter advertising revenue to $1.85 billion, with executives stressing that human teams retain oversight of high-level decisions. The competitive context sharpened the announcement. WBD made the move days before Cannes Lions, amid a wave of agentic ad-buying news, and just after broadcaster Fox claimed to launch the first end-to-end agentic advertising platform, so the timing was as much about signaling leadership as about shipping product.
The executives framed it as a new phase of convergence. WBD described embarking on the next frontier of advertising, where linear and digital come together on a single platform, each keeping its own essence yet able to plan, package and optimize across both, all measurable at cloud scale. The data layer is what makes the agents useful. The platform brings audience insights, inventory data, campaign performance metrics, forecasting systems and measurement into a single, AI-driven process that can self-optimize campaigns, which is the foundation the autonomous agents reason over when they plan and adjust.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR ADVERTISERS AND AGENCIES
Unifying linear and digital buying attacks one of television's oldest inefficiencies. When a single platform plans and optimizes across both, advertisers can allocate budget by audience and outcome rather than by channel silo, which is exactly the convergence buyers have wanted as viewing splits between traditional TV and streaming. Agentic planning and forecasting change the buying job. If agents handle planning, forecasting and real-time optimization, the human role shifts toward setting strategy and guardrails, so the advantage goes to advertisers and agencies who can direct these systems well rather than those who simply operate the old manual workflows.
Closed-loop measurement is the credibility anchor. Self-optimizing agents are only as trustworthy as the outcomes they learn from, so WBD's emphasis on closed-loop measurement is what could let advertisers judge premium TV on real business results rather than reach alone, the persistent gap in television accountability. Forecasting is where the early value is likely to land. Reliable demand and audience forecasting has long been one of the hardest, most manual parts of selling television, so agents that can model it dynamically across linear and digital could improve how efficiently inventory is packaged and priced, benefiting buyers and sellers alike before fully autonomous buying ever arrives.
The AWS foundation signals where premium video is heading. Building on Bedrock AgentCore and a composable interoperability layer means WBD's stack is designed for agents to exchange context, which matters as buyer-side and seller-side agents increasingly need to talk to each other across the supply chain. It is part of a fast-moving competitive race, not an isolated move. Fox launched what it billed as the first end-to-end agentic advertising platform with partners including WPP, Horizon Media and Comcast's Universal Ads, so premium-video sellers are racing to automate, which means advertisers should expect agentic buying options across CTV to widen quickly.
The pressure on WBD is concrete, which raises the stakes. With first-quarter advertising revenue down 7% year over year, the company needs this transformation to make its premium inventory easier to buy and easier to prove, so the agentic rebuild is as much a commercial necessity as a technology showcase. Flexible targeting across linear and digital is the practical benefit. Buyers can focus on specific brands or audience segments across both, with WBD's system recommending inventory allocation, which makes it easier to run one coherent audience strategy.
The convergence also reflects how audiences actually watch now. Households move fluidly between linear and streaming, often within the same evening, so an ad platform that plans across both mirrors real viewing behavior far better than the siloed systems it replaces, which is what finally makes unified frequency and reach management achievable. The caution is to verify the automation, not just adopt it. A self-optimizing, seller-owned platform is powerful, but advertisers should hold it to independent, outcome-based measurement and keep their own guardrails, so the convenience of agentic buying does not quietly cede control or measurement to the platform.
There is also a strategic lesson in who built it. WBD chose to rebuild on a major cloud provider's agentic infrastructure rather than assemble the capability piecemeal, a reminder that, as advertising automates, control of modern, interoperable infrastructure increasingly determines which media owners can compete for automated budgets at all.
ERASING THE LINEAR-DIGITAL LINE
WBD rebuilt its ad stack so agents plan and buy across linear and streaming as one. The job shifts from operating silos to directing the system and verifying the lift.
WHAT WE WOULD DO ABOUT IT
Plan across linear and streaming as one. We use WBD's unified stack to allocate a client's budget by audience and outcome across both linear and digital, rather than running them as two disconnected buys. Direct the agents, set the guardrails. We treat agentic planning and optimization as tools we steer, defining clear goals and brand and budget guardrails so the automation serves the client's strategy rather than running it.
Hold it to closed-loop, independent proof. We measure WBD's agentic buying on incremental business outcomes using independent verification, not the platform's self-reported numbers, so premium TV is judged on real lift. Anchor premium TV in community. We pair unified, agentic buying with community-first creative that earns attention on the biggest screen, turning efficient reach into genuine brand affinity, the heart of CAC to Community.
